Coffee has many benefits regarding the energy rush and increased focus, etc. But here we are talking about the increase in memory functioning of the brain. Adding to the fact, the scientists of the Johns Hopkins University have proven this fact with their observation on 160 subjects(volunteers).
Study: If Organic Coffee Can Improve Brain Health
This observation was conceptualized by Daniel Borota and it had a series of undisclosed experiments to the subjects. Firstly, the observation would focus on noting the change in shape recognition that the subjects would have seen a day before. In addition to that, the test would hamper some of the shapes to look if the subjects on caffeine remember them perfectly.
The experiment started with each of 160 volunteers had to look at the simple images of the rubber duckling, chair, etc. After which, the participants had to take the pills which the observer gave them. Half of those pills were the placebo and rest were 200 mg caffeine pills. However, none of the participants knew if they have had caffeine or the placebo.
Further, their salivary samples after one hour, three hours, and twenty-four hours of pill consumption. In addition to that, the volunteers had to come the next day i.e. 24 hours from consuming the pills. Then the observation continued again.
The researchers now have shown the shown the same number of images to the volunteers. However, not all the images were the same. Some of them were the exact same, some were totally different, and some were similar to the images they saw the previous day but not the same. Additionally, the volunteers had to recognize if the images had any changes if yes-then which changes.
There the researchers found that the people who were on the caffeine pills were peculiar about recognizing the images.
Additionally, the volunteers who have had the placebo had shown a substantial low response for the same. In fact, caffeinated people actually could point to the tiniest details. Whereas, people on placebo found it difficult to recognize that images were not the same as the previous ones they had seen.
Results of the Study
In this observation, the volunteers were given the caffeine or the placebo pills after they had seen the images. It would eliminate the variables like increased focus, concentration, etc. and only caffeine was responsible for their short spanning memory. Thus, this observation clearly explains that coffee improves memory.
On the contrary, it is not necessary that regularly consuming coffee can have you a gift of remembering the long-term incidents. Yes, the studies for proving the association of coffee with the long-term cognition/memory are underway.
However, the author of this observational research i.e. Daniel Borota has successfully proven that coffee helps in improving memory. In fact, the John Hopkins University strives to find more to this topic and associate coffee with the long-term memory.
