What is Peaberry Coffee
Peaberry is neither a Coffee bean nor a Coffee drink. As mentioned before, it is the most unique coffee bean that you have ever come across.
Talking about the Coffee beans in general, it is a fruit. You will find two bean seeds attached to each other, forming a flat surface on one side and a rounded shape on the other side.
While most of the coffee beans have got this shape, there are instances when a certain mutation process happens one either seed of the coffee bean. This results in giving a round shape to the coffee bean making it look cuter than the normal flattened seeds.
The point is, this kind of mutation can occur with any kind of Coffee bean. So, if any Robusta Coffee bean undergoes a similar mutation, then you can call it as a Robusta Peaberry coffee.
Also when you roast these cute little short Coffee beans (Peaberry of course!), they roast in a different way compared to the flat beans. When the usual beans are roasted, the flat side may stick to each other but here the Peaberries just roll away without getting attached on other coffee beans.
Because of this roasting nature, the Peaberries are separated from the standard coffee beans so that you could evenly roast them.
Coming to the taste factor, these round coffee beans have a different flavour than the normal coffee beans. There are certain other theories which states that both of them don’t differ much in taste. Peaberries indeed taste different as it has got an unfertilized seed on it which enhances the flavour. But not sure if it is better than the standard coffee.
A packet of coffee beans will have 2 – 5% proportion of the Peaberries in them, they are naturally formed!
Next time you find them, don’t freak out! These are special coffee beans which are roasted in a different way. The taste difference is only slight that could be only identified by the true Coffee Lovers!
